Ambush bug (Phymata)

Reveler Conservation Area

I never get tired of seeing these bugs, or photographing them. They are so prehistoric looking, and also one can imagine they might have inspired some of the creatures in various fantasy/sci-fi flicks! As their name suggests, they lie in ambush, waiting for a hapless insect to land nearby, and then they pounce.

If bugs weren’t tiny what a different world this would be. Sci-fi indeed.
