Unlike most of its kin, this species just digs a shallow pit and then covers the dead animal (usually voles, mice, etc.) with debris. This was next to a dead Peromyscus mouse. You can see all the mites on this beetle; some Nicrophorus species are covered so much you can't even see their elytra and they have trouble moving around.
