Bald-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata), female

Reveler Conservation Area

Lifting up a log in the woods, I found this queen hornet. This is an already impregnated female who will have overwintered under the log. Now that spring has arrived, she'll head out to begin nest construction and lay eggs. The nest will be simple and small. Once the eggs hatch and more hornets are born, the work on the big paper nest we are all familiar with, will begin. Only the queens survive the winter, the workers and others die off when cold weather comes.

Thank you again for not only a terrific photo but the info on the life cycle.

A beautiful queen! These hornets are extra intimidating. They ride into the house on the logs for the wood stove. Adds a little excitement on those long winter nights when they warm up and start flying around the living room. BV

Good to see the queen survived the winter and is ready to start a new colony.

Fascinating ... and thank you for the information. We do not have hornets here in Australia as far as I know, but we have nasty saw flies!

What superb detail, although hard to believe you got this close to it for this great capture. V.
