Emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis)

This beautiful beetle (native to east Asia) is in the Buprestidae family, the metallic wood-boring beetles. Unfortunately, it is also the insect responsible for the loss of all our ash trees, not only in Ottawa but throughout the eastern part of NA down to Georgia. It is the larvae that cause the rapid death of the trees, not the adult beetles. Bug Guide says this: "Accidentally introduced with imported packaging/crating wood, probably in the late 1990s; first reported in se. MI and sw. ON in 2002." Thus, in a very short time this accidental introduction has decimated the ash tree population. Pretty scary.
