Saltmarsh moth caterpillar (Estigmene acrea), #8131

Reveler Conservation Area

Two of these vividly coloured caterpillars were feeding together, each slightly different in pattern, from the other. Despite their name, they are not exclusively associated with saltmarshes, which is a good thing, as the nearest saltmarsh is a very, very long way away! Although they are found in saltmarshes, and other marshes, they are also found in farm fields, edges of woodlands, etc. These caterpillars will turn into a beautiful black and white spotted moth.

Such a pretty caterpillar! Will it cause skin irritation if a human should handle it? V
