The conservation area has a relatively high population of this endangered tree species. Unfortunately, the tree is very susceptible to a canker disease which has caused a sharp decline of the species in Ontario and elsewhere. This is why finding so many butternuts at the conservation area is a hopeful sign, some may show resistance to the disease (we hope).
