Milk snake (Lampropeltis triangulum)

Marlborough Forest

This very small milk snake was found underneath a piece of wood in the forest. While this one was about 12 inches long, they can grow to between 25-35 inches in length. Some of them are a beautiful red and pale gray colour, others like this are brown. Their belly has a lovely black and white checkerboard pattern. They are completely harmless.

Cool find. I am surprised that they are active --- must still be cool in your area, yes?
