European elm bark beetle galleries

Mer Bleue area

These lines are called galleries, and are created by the larvae of the European elm bark beetle under the bark of a dying tree. According to Charley Eiseman, the centre, deeply grooved line is the spot where the parent snuggled in, and the lines radiating outward are made by each of the many larvae. To me, these galleries are attractive and look like a work of art. This was one of many on an old tree that had long since fallen down and lost all its bark.

Interesting photo and info! Thinking I have seen this before. Isn't this the beetle that helped spread Dutch Elm Disease?

they definitely do look like a work of art. At first I thought it was an oriental rug.

I love larvae artwork! Lots of it on driftwood trunks on beaches around here.

The larvae look like they've created an engraving of a many legged creature.

lively, almost expressive patterns...the larvae seem to have fanned out in formation..
