American woodcock

Mer Bleue area

The cryptic colouration and pattern of this species makes it hard to see when it sits motionless. I first noticed this bird from a short distance away (it was on the other side of a ditch) and thought it was a clump of dried leaves, but then I came back because something made me think it could be a woodcock, and it was. I didn't approach too closely, but used the zoom and cropped the image to get this photo. These birds will remain absolutely still until you almost step on them and then take off at great speed from just about under your feet. The next photo shows the pattern on its back.

Great photo, Christine. These are a striking bird, and amazing that they let you so close. Is it some kind of snipe?
