This is the third woodcock I've seen in the last few days, but the only one I was able to photograph. The others were flushed up by my stepping almost on top of them! They, like grouse, will remain quite still until you are about to step on them, when they take off with a whirr of wings, nearly causing heart attacks :-) This one was across a ditch and obviously far enough away that it didn't feel threatened. I didn't approach too closely, but used the zoom lens and then cropped the image a lot to get this photo.
