There were scores of these fungi along the sandy sides of a trail. These may be Astraeus sp. as they are locally abundant on sandy soils. I find these fungi fascinating with their unusual shape. These ones were not attached to the soil but were blowing around, which happens as they age. These ones are all old and you can see where their spores have dispersed through the sac on top. Not surprisingly they are in the same group of fungi as puffballs.
