Had to look this one up too and learned it is the official state insect of the U.S. State of Maryland. Amazing how it looks in butterfly form. Great find Christine.

whatever the plant, it does look succulent...the larva looks lovely too, although clearly a long way from Maryland..

Those rows of branched tubercles, along with the colours, made me think this must be a close relative of our Blue Argus, caterpillars of which are in my backyard at the moment. So I looked up the Baltimore Checkerspot on the web, and yes, they're both nymphalids and looks like they might be even more closeely related than that. The foodplant wouldn't happen to be in Acanthaceae or Scrophulariaceae by any chance?
