Just over a week ago, on this same sugar maple tree, I saw at least a dozen of these caterpillars, in various instars, but all early(ish). Today, saw only this one. It is also an earlier instar, as the mature larva will have an orange head and rump. The head, in case anyone is wondering, is at the bottom of the creature.
