Painted lichen moth (Hypoprepia fucosa), #8090

Reveler Conservation Area

A beautiful very un-moth-like moth. As the name suggests, lichen forms one of the foods for this insect, but in its larval stage. Larvae also eat moss and algae. Last year at this site, I found one of these moths laying eggs in a patch of moss on a rock.

Your excellent capture highlights the beauty of this moth. The backlighting in particular is most impressive. V.
