Chalcid wasp cocoons

Fletcher Wildlife Garden. Found on the underside of an ash leaf. Some species of these parasitic wasps focus on the larvae of moths, flies and some butterflies, while others are parasitic on beetles. They are an odd-looking wasp with very enlarged hind legs. To see a photo of one of the Chalcid wasps (a parasite on Buprestid beetles): http://www.pbase.com/laroseforest/image/151619327

Amazing detail on something so tiny. The adult doesn't even look like a wasp to me. V.

the near spiral of sticky-looking blobs Is fascinating...most seem to have a curious little floret at one end..

Interesting pattern. Great find and shot. Not long before they emerge I guess. V

Clustered so cozily, and to think of the wasps they will become. V

Yet another fine example of the little things in life that we all would otherwise pass by.
