Saddled prominent caterpillar (Heterocampa guttivitta), #7994

Larose Forest

This caterpillar was found on an elm leaf, slowly munching its way along the leaf rib. It is a very variable caterpillar, depending on which instar it is. In the early stages it is red with long spikes. As a mature caterpillar, it has a red pattern on its back, hence its name of saddled prominent. This is not yet the final instar, possibly 4th or 5th?

Impressive caterpillar with great detail. I suspect it will get even more impressive as mature. V

I like how the caterpillar takes up the entire diagonal of the frame, and the details are excellent, too. Always learning something new with your images! V.
