Silver-spotted skipper (Epargyreus clarus)

Near the Ottawa River. This is our largest skipper butterfly with a wingspan of about 1 to 1 1/2 inches. It is a striking butterfly with its large silvery wingspot. The larval host plants are black locust, hog peanut and other plants in the legume family. There were several black locust trees nearby.

Wonderful capture. As a child I would have loved to have touched such a thing before it fluttered off.
