Snowy Owl

It has been a phenomenal winter for snowy owls throughout the entire eastern part of North America, with these amazing creatures being seen as far south as Florida. Now, they are heading back to their northern breeding grounds on the tundra. Generally, I don't go out looking for owls because there is usually such a crowd of people around them, but I stumbled across a couple recently in a quiet location, where they stayed for a short time before carrying on north. Not a great photo, because I had to crop severely to get this closeup, and I didn't want to approach the owl and scare it, so I stayed on the road and used the zoom feature on my camera and then, as mentioned, cropped heavily.

You got a terrific shot - the joy of zoom is that you can stay back and still get a sharp photo.

What a superb bird to have passing by. They look to be so heavily and powerfully built - perhaps their build serves to reduce heat loss in the cold.

Excellent capture Christine! I was fortunate to see one here on the island and shoot a couple of very distant photos, not nearly as good as this one! V
