Gallium sphinx moth caterpillar (Hyles gallii), #7893

Found near the Mer Bleue Conservation area, on a gravel path. This poor caterpillar did not seem too healthy. It is apparently common around fields and areas with lots of galium (bedstraw), but this is the first I've seen. The trailside had abundant galium so no surprise this insect was there. According to Wagner in "Caterpillars of Eastern North America", this is a very variable caterpillar.

It will undoubtedly be a snack for something higher up the food chain.
