Northern spring azure butterfly (Celastrina lucia)

I was pleased to see at least four of these in Larose Forest yesterday. These tiny blues, in the Lycaenidae family, look rather sober with their wings closed, but when they open them, there is a flash of brilliant blue! After the overwintering butterflies (mourning cloaks (Camberwell beauty), commas, and tortoiseshells), these are the first to emerge from their chrysalis in spring, in this area.

What a beautiful sight! I have been wondering lately when someone would see something other than a Mourning Cloak. It seems that by this time last year we were seeing elfins, whites and all sorts of other butterflies. Not this year!

Spring must have arrived. Even with the muted tones on this side of the wings, this is still a beauty. Wonderful detail. V.
