This is a relatively large (for a mite) red velvet mite in the Superfamily Trombidioidea. Impossible to ID to family, for me anyway. There were a number of them around the woodland edges, this one on Turkey Tails polypore (fungi).
At this time of year, sifting through leaf litter on south facing slopes in woodlands, can turn up a huge number of creatures. Although snow was knee deep in places, some slopes facing south were bare, and amongst the leaves were numerous spiders, these mites, several species of stinkbugs, a moth, ground beetles, and damsel bugs. All on their little island of leaf litter surrounded by snow!
