Earth star (Geastrum sp.)

It is always magical to come across these little jewels! They push up from the forest floor and eventually their "arms" fold backward and the spore sac enlarges. They are in the same group as puffballs, and so their spores disperse in much the same way... when it rains, the drops hitting the spore sac in the centre, do so with enough force that the fine powdery spores fly out and disperse.
