Pileated woodpecker, male

This handsome big woodpecker was busily probing the giant sugar maple across the road from me. I have a feeling that the poor tree is starting to decay, and woodpeckers are good at knowing when this is happening, as they know they can find insects inside the wood.

That's pretty close to the house for a Pileated. At least down my way you'll see them only deep in the woods.
