The male looks like he might have trouble holding on to that slippery back! The wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa), had several mating pairs of these beetles, as well as their nymphs and larvae. This is an introduced species, used to control aphids in gardens, but now spread throughout. In winter, they try to seek warmth in enclosed spaces, including houses.
