A little while ago, I posted a photo of a male black swallowtail butterfly, that had hatched from a chrysalis I overwintered. I was just beginning to think that the second chrysalis would not 'hatch' at all, when yesterday evening, I saw this female clinging to the chrysalis and pumping her wings. She is now sitting on a nearby cedar tree until ready to fly off. The very wide blue band indicates that this is a female. She also has smaller yellow spots than the male.
