There were a number of these migratory butterflies flying along a rocky outcrop in Frontenac County, along with the much more numerous red admiral butterflies (also migratory). This one had been ovipositing on a pearly everlasting plant (larval host plant), newly emerged and only a few inches tall. The two large eye spots help differentiate this species from the very similar painted lady (Vanessa cardui) which has multiple eye-spots on the underwing.
