Blue cohosh (Caulophyllum giganteum)

Ottawa east

Another of the early spring flowers in this region. While the flowers are not showy, this plant of rich woodlands, has attractive purple foliage when young, as here, which turns later into a dark greenish-purple, and the flowers vanish to be replaced by pretty blue fruit. This plant has been used in herbal remedies but as it can be an irritant and even poisonous, I would not try it.

Very unusual and lovely flowers. I seem to recollect the name from when I collected bulbs, The Indians used it in their medicine I believe.

Apparently it has been used for thousands of years to ease pain in childbirth, so Google tells me! I have never seen the plant before, it has a somewhat ethereal look.
