Eastern comma (Polygonia comma)

It was another unusually hot day for mid-March at about +25 celsius. I found this butterfly, and two more eastern commas, as well as two mourning cloaks (called Camberwell Beauty in Britain), at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden. Both species overwinter as adults, seeking shelter from the cold under bark, in cracks and crevices. If the weather turns cold again, they'll head back to shelter. As there is not much in the way of nectar, in fact nothing in the way of nectar, these butterflies are happy to feed on sap, such as here on a Manitoba maple tree.

Wonderful with the back lighting to give it a glow. I hope they will be okay. V.

I love your composition on this one, Christine. I haven't seen any of these yet this year and just one cloak, in spite of the warmth. Beautiful!
