This funny looking object is a gall made by a Cynipid wasp on an oak leaf. The little black dot on the upper right corner of the gall, is a springtail, or snow flea as they are popularly called. There are many different types of springtails and they come in many colours and patterns. However, they are so tiny (1-3mm) that the most commonly seen ones (the "snow fleas") look like specks of pepper scattered on snow!
