Painted lady (Vanessa cardui) on New England Aster

Like the Red Admiral and the American Lady butterflies, this species is also migratory. I never see many of them around Ottawa, finding that the American Lady is far more common. Therefore, it is always a treat to see this species.

Great find Christine! A pretty butterfly on a pretty flower! I haven't seen one of these since 2007. With all the other Vanessa butterflies around I keep thinking that I will find one or two of these this year but so far that hasn't been so.

Very pretty, Christine. The purple really contrasts nicely with the Painted Lady.
