Pileated woodpecker work

This cavity was being excavated by a female Pileated woodpecker. Unfortunately, she flew off as I approached. This is in an ironwood tree, and I can only imagine the force needed to create a hole of this size (it was approx. 6 inches wide and 12-14 inches long). Beneath the tree was the other giveaway sign of a pileated woodpecker, a huge pile of fresh wood chips.

I wonder of this woodpecker is going to have a headache tonight after working on this tough tree. It looks like it won't be long before she has a nice home to sleep it off in :)
