Found while walking through a section of Ferguson Forest (Kemptville), not far from the highway. The skull was half buried under snow and only the top part of the antlers remained above the snow. Something, probably a red squirrel, had been gnawing on them. Dug out from the snow, they proved to be a big rack. There were a couple of other bones nearby. Speculation is that the deer may have been hit by a car and made it into the woods before dying, or, was shot by a bow-hunter (bow-hunting is allowed in the forest) but got away and died of his injuries. Or he could have died from old age (few animals in the wild seem to die of this natural occurrence), or disease....
