Nortel Woods. Some snakes are still out soaking up what warmth they can get from the sun. But all too soon they will seek their hibernation sites and we won't see them again until next spring. In this weather, snakes, being cold-blooded animals needing warmth to really get moving, are fairly slow and sluggish. This little beauty was sunning itself on a bed of lichen. Snakes "smell" with their tongues and when you see a snake flicking its tongue in and out, it is not being aggressive. Rather, it is trying to determine, by scent, what you are!
