Red eft/ Red-spotted newt (Notophthalmus viridescens)

The Red eft is the terrestrial(and juvenile) stage of the Red-spotted newt. The newt is the adult and is a brownish green colour, although still with the row of red spots on its back, along with smaller black dots. The eft spends several years in this terrestrial stage before returning to the water as an adult newt. This particular newt was tiny.

The newts don't mate until late fall. The female lays her eggs on submerged aquatic vegetation. Your best bet would be to return her to the wild, to a shallow wetland. I am assuming you have a newt (the aquatic stage of the red eft) and not the terrestrial stage like the one above. Newts are brown, and as you see, the efts are red.
