The Charleston Miracle League is a charitable organization whose purpose is to allow children with physical and mental disabilities (some mild, some profound) to experience the joy of noncompetitive recreational baseball. The games are played on Saturday mornings in the spring and fall on a special field made possible by the City of Charleston (donation of land) and private donations for construction costs. Volunteers serve as buddies for the players who play on teams named after major league baseball teams. Kids who can hit pitched balls do, some hit from tees. Some kids run the bases, some roll in their wheelchairs, and a few are carried. Family members, visitors and volunteers cheer them on and every player is announced just like in the big leagues. Participating as a volunteer is one of the most rewarding and humbling experiences you can imagine.
