the graffiti boat

When Hurricane Hugo roared through Charleston on the night of September 21st 1989 with 130 mile per hour winds it moved many hundreds of boats onto land. The graffiti boat on Folly Road is probably the only boat still remaining where Hugo put it, just off the causeway heading onto the island. For many months this ruined hull sat there, quietly misplaced. Then someone saw its potential as a sort of marine billboard and ever since there has been an ever changing stream of messages on its side, painted there by vacationers and locals alike. A time or two an inch or so of accumulated paint has peeled off under its own weight. Officials have put trash cans and such by the boat to keep empty paint cans from finding their way into the adjacent salt marsh and a sign reminding people to please clean up after themselves, though the sign has now become a secondary billboard. I took what might be called "legacy" pictures of the graffiti boat when I lived on Folly in '94 and plan to scan some of these at some point. I drive past the boat every day and will record some of the more memorable images in the months to come.
