White Baneberry

West Virginia

These spring wildflowers are the precursor to the berries.

White Baneberry aka Doll's Eyes, Cohosh (Actaea pachypoda). The berries are poisonous . As few as 5 or 6 of them can make you seriously ill. More can cause death. However, it is unlikely that you will eat very many if you are cautious, as they don't taste very good -- they are very acrid-tasting. Most cases of poisoning are with children.

Very nice DOF.
I understand catepillars eat plants like this.
It, in turn, makes them poisonous as butterflies, thus keeping predators at bay.

As Bob Dylan sings:
Is that a smile I see behind your face?
Will it lead me to glory or to disgrace?
Jvan Photography05-May-2006 12:56
Pretty little flowers. I like the solid green background, and the way the flower is set off to the side. Thanks for the heads up that the berries are poisonous...it I ever make to to WV I will know not to eat White Baneberries now :-)
