Karen, I guess I was at this site back in 2004. I had forgot about it until I started talking about Paint Creek cementery, Greencastle, today. One of the pictures that I looked at, (has fence in background) looks like Greencastle. I have been going there for about 15 years, have missed the last 4 or 5 but plan on going the first Sun. in June.

Hey there Karen.
At the risk of stating the obvious, your photos are beautiful and their composition and content provide us with a glimpse of your talent and depth of character. You're ability to capture images that prevoke such emotion is truely a precious gift. As a seemingly "successful" indentured servant of "middle class" America, "living" and working in a large tech hub that I loath more with each passing day, I am at once envious, ashamed and angered by your WV work.

Many thanks. Keep doing that which you do, so obviously well.

Cliff

I'd like information on Gaylord White. I have lived in Bluefield for 33 years until a few years ago. I'd heard things about Lake shawnee a couple of times but never knew the whole story. My family and I would like to take this tour but we'd like to get permission first so if you have any details i would appreciate it. Thank you very much.

Karen,
Very nice photos. I enjoyed your comments about MTR and the coal industry. Also to words to "Paradise." I'm from a blue-grass pickin' family and we sing that one. My grandmother was born in Lumberport, WVA (Miller family) and I've always had a soft spot for WVA. I,m from PA.
Keep up the good work.

In my research of Mercer County, West Virginia I was pleased to come across your website. Your pictures are heart warming.
The article which states comments about the Service Employees International Union/SEIU is an erroneous contradiction of the truth. Apparently the writer of the article was ill informed. There is no mandate for any employee to be or not be a member of SEIU. The SEIU over sees that the Federal Goverment Labor Laws and Fair Employment Practices, etc are in compliance by employers of its members.
Respectfuly Submitted.

Hi ms karen
I notice the excellent color and detail you get out of you k10
I thinking of the new k20 mostly because of the sensor
roumers have claimed the that it is very nose free at 100 iso
and that would be perfect for me.
but I have some feeling about the flash systm.
what do you think of the quality of pentax and the flash system
thanks for the help

Great photos, Karen.

I ran across them while doing a google search for info on the Battle of Pigion Roost. The cemetery where the Pigeon Roost monument is located is not too far from my house and when I was growing up I had an aunt, uncle & cousin who lived on the other side of the cemetery & their property joined it. We used to play in the cemetery when we were kids.

Keep up the good work. I have some great shots of the "new" Clay Cemetery at Lake Shawnee. Guess I'll have to join pbase & post them!

Modern living had isolated man from his enviroment and self. So much is covered and cleaned and hidden behind facades of sophistication. You bring us back to real life and real people and real emotion. I do appreciate the times in the past you were busy living life as well as the time you take to share with us when you can.

Karen~
I have been a lurker at dpreview for the past few years. I've always enjoyed your photos and stories that went with them. Today I saw the Recovery gallery. I read every caption on every picture. If someone can read that and not feel anything there is something wrong with them. You are a great photographer and the thoughts and insight that go with it is extraordinary. You have a real talent and a gift Karen, I wish nothing but the best for you. You will probably help more people than you will ever know. Just remember you have someone in Wisconsin keeping good thoughts for you.

Karen,

I came across your website while on pbase and I would like to commend you for what you are doing. Taking the necessary steps to get well. It must not be easy doing it cold turkey much less publicizing it right here on pbase. You seem to have the strength that most addicts would love to have so keep up the good work and take care. Let us know how you are doing and if you need to talk, we are only an email away.

Karen, You communicate so well with your pictures. There is a bit of "you" in each one. I've spent time looking through all of your Galleries and I read you as a very distinct photo-journalist. Thank you for letting me share your world, the good, the bad, and the beautiful. No one can ever fully understand the pain of addiction or withdrawal unless they have gone through it themselves. You've let the world "walk in your shoes" so well. Thank you.

Dear Karen,
I thought you'd been pretty quiet for awhile. Absolutely love today's px - "Will to survive" in more ways than one. It's beautiful. I know you'll make it because you also have the will to survive. Being quite a bit older than you, I can tell you that having material possessions doesn't make one happy. Observe the rich and powerful - they are never satisfied with what they have and always want more. If your surroundings give you that inner peace that you need to survive, so be it. I have been ill for over a month now and can tell you I appreciate every breath of fresh air, field of weeds and wildflowers, clouds in the sky, etc. I wish you the strength, will, and grace to gain back your inner peace.

You have a great gallery of pictures. I live in Vancouver Washington and have never been to that part of the country but you sure show the beauty of it in your work. I love the old buildings as well as the scenic countryside. As someone said in an earlier post, that part of the countryside is disappearing. The pastor of the church that I go to grew up in West Virginia. I am going to send the link to him. I'm sure he will enjoy your gallery as much as I have. Keep the pictures coming. Thanks so much.

I was so happy to see that your gallery on addiction became a favorite. Your gallery about the woman living with her dogs in poverty is also beautiful and touching. I love pbase because it brings people closer together by enabling us to see through each other's eyes. You don't turn away from disturbing sights, but bring the beauty of compassion and oneness to them. Thank you.

Phil Douglis22-Oct-2003 02:21
Hi, Karen,

Thanks so much leaving that very kind message in my guestbook. I am delighted that my galleries have been of such help to you in your photography. I hope you can actually apply some of the things I demonstrate with my examples...I just checked your own galleries, and I found two examples that are quite expressive. Your shot of the air conditioned outhouse, while literal in form, is certainly incongruous. And your cemetery closeup -- the only you call "creepy" is a very powerful image because of the softly focused face that the very sharp cracked glass that covers it.

Your comment defines the reasons why I post on pbase. I am a teacher, and I use my galleries to help others learn how to express ideas photographically. Keep coming back -- you will find new ideas all the time. And I will also be expanding the galleries as I travel to new places, such as Antarctica in December and China and Tibet in June. Feel free to leave comments on my individual pictures, or drop me an email if you ever have anything you would like to discuss with me at length.

Thanks again,
Phil Douglis
