Brush Creek West Virginia

Taken at a lesser known but very impressive waterfalls outside Athens, West Virginia.

Most of the property is under protection by the Nature Conservancy. From the WV branch webpage:

"Preserve: Brush Creek Location: Mercer County, West Virginia

Habitat Type: 124 acres of river gorge; includes limestone and sandstone outcrops with a suite of rare species. The preserve follows Brush Creek to its mouth at the Bluestone River.

What to Look for: A trail that parallels Brush Creek is a great place to see dramatic spring wildflowers, migrating warblers, and the dramatic limestone and sandstone cliffs. Adjacent to the preserve, the State of West Virginia owns the largest falls in southern West Virginia, Brush Creek Falls."

@Nancy, the trail makes a right at the Bluestone River. It goes all the way to Pipestem State Park. I've never hiked that far. I hike it down to the river and to another big waterfalls. You can cross there and keep going. I'm not sure of the length but it's three hour round trip to that point if you're hiking slowly. You can go onto river at the bottom of that trail. I have heard it's 6 hours to Pipestem. But to answer your question, no there is no loop and you have to turn around and come back.

Great pictures You have a keen eye. I grew up a few minutes from the falls and spent a lot of time there. You should come to them in mid winter, they freeze solid from top to bottom with the creek running underneath. Eades Mill used to be located there, hence the name of the road running from Rt20 to camp creek. You can still see the ruins of the mill on the far bank and the chisel marks on boulders on the mountain where they quaried the sandstone to build the foundation.

You have a beautiful gallery here!I live in IL, and there are many conservation area's here too. I love to go spend the day walking around, following trails etc. Unfortunately, I don't get that chance often.
