A birding trip with my good friend Roger Holmberg to Cana, Eastern Darien, on the Panama border to Colombia 12 – 19 February 2010. Roger will most certainly, sooner or later, contribute with non-bird photos.

The birding involves flying in a small plane to the “Cana airstrip” a grassy area where it is perfectly safe to land, a primitive but well functioning lodge, some superb trails and also a trail that climbs some 1000 meters to Cerro Pirre.

Being there you really feel the wings of history. The goldmine and all the people that lived here, only a hundred years ago, and yet no trace of the houses. The old British machinery is still there as evidence of the big business at the time.
We counted 312 kinds of birds, including a few in Panama city.

Flying in, the vast forest area was fantastic to see, and once at the lodge area, the four species of Macaw flying and talking to each other was dreamlike. We had some nice raptor migration as well as a number of the specialities.

The camping on Cerro Pirre is not something you forget in the nearest future. Amazing nature and superb birds like the Pirre Hummingbird.

I can only say “Go there”
