:: Get Your Hands Off (My Environment) ::

West Sussex

There's a beautiful forest near where I live (in the South Downs National Park) but for reasons impossible to fathom, people fly-tip their rubbish here. A few weeks ago there were mattresses and old fridges on this spot. I always stop to see if there's any material with an address on it. Today, I found a fully addressed letter in this horrid pile. I'll be reporting it!

Great statement, wonderful contrast of values. Beauty above, complete disregard of it below. Very upsetting to see. Its appears to be a universal affliction.

Visual Pollution, wonder when that's going to get on the world agenda??? I live in Unley council South Oz and if a tree has a girth greater than a meter you can't chop it down without council permission. This is almost never given. A court recently held up an action to cut one down on the grounds of public safety. It was gone within the hour or the court order. The Council couldn't lodge its appeal. Great statememt.

All too familiar for my area [unfortunately]. At first I wondered how the trash would look with the color boosted a bit to drive the point home. In retrospect and sadness, it's an accurate representation of what you find all too often. -- LVPG

Looks like a nice red hoodie - I know someone who'd wash&wear that! (not me I hasten to add).
Nice shot Tim, and good point. jono

Fly-tipping is a major problem - this ilustrates it in a very effective way - Quentin

Ah, I see. Thanks for the distinction. I'm not sure we have an actual English term for that, other than the phrase "illegal disposal of waste on land" as you say. Thankfully, it occurs relatively rarely in the state where I live, as there is a very strong environmental consciousness here. -- DF

Fly tipping is the illegal disposal of waste on land, as opposed to littering, which could just be dropping a chocolate wrapper on the pavement (sidewalk to you ;-).

I've never heard the expression "fly-tip" before. Is this a quaint britishism for littering? In any case, it is a disgusting, disrespectful, and (rightfully) illegal practice. Your image makes an appropriate documentary, and I hope the police follow up on the address information you provided. -- DF

Hi Tim, an excellent statement.
As to why people do it, a variety of reasons: laziness; lack of aesthetic standards; local council charge for removing certain items (no end of fly tipping happened when Oxford council tried charging to remove mattresses etc). Also people don't value the environment. It isn't hard to see why: I've worked with special needs kids from large estates where trees are removed (in one case, the council has just felled an avenue of ancient beeches and oaks as it's cheaper than maintaining them), where there is massive infill building etc etc. If you alienate people from the "natural" environment, then they will grow up missing something but not knowing they miss it, and won't respect it when they encounter it....if you see what i mean.
Anyway, rant over. Good for you for an original and relevant image.
