Possibly one of the most famous highways in the world, Route 66 was one of the original US highways, established on November 11, 1926, and decommissioned on June 27, 1985.

Through the years, even before it was decommissioned, Route 66 developed a cachet and a mystique. It became legendary. Maybe because of it's destination, California and the Golden West. Possibly because of accounts of the great western migration that occurred in it's lifetime. Certainly it represented new opportunities and hopes of a better life. The reasons are many, so many that it continues to exist in our culture, and in reality, battered and neglected, but there for the finding.
