Buffalo's architect is the finest.What happened saddens me. My grandchildren totally missed out on the "good old days" in Buffalo; hopefully things will begin to change.

Fascinating collection of post cards representing my home town. I remember shopping at the Washington Street Market next to St. Michael's church with my grandmother. We'd walk thru the arcade to Main Street & cross Main to Flint & Kent Store. My grandmother's favorite store. My brother was usher at Hippodrome Theatre in the early 1940s. My mother arrived in Buffalo with her parents and siblings from Philadelphia on the Black Diamond train in the early 1920s. You show one post card of the Lehigh Valley train station. She told me it was a gorgeous white marble structure and relatively new when their train arrived. At Christmastime the displays in Adam Meldrum & Andersons, J.N. Adams, and William Hengerer's windows were beautiful. I remember hearing a brand new recording of Bing Crosby singing White Christmas as we shopped in one of the stores. I was about 7 years old with my mother and we stood silent for a few moments to hear all the words to that song. At the age of 15, my mother entered a Charleston contest at the opening of Shea's Buffalo Theatre in 1926 and almost won, placing second. My father worked at Ford Motor on Furhmann Blvd. as an auto mechanic. Lived in an upper rear flat at 2470 Bailey Avenue. School and church was St. Gerard's. My grandmother told me on a hot summer day I slipped away, took all my clothes off and climbed into a horse trough at the corner of Bailey & E. Delavan. Had traffic backed up at intersection. As my grandmother was running to see where I was, a truck driver plucked me out of the horse trough and said: "Is this your kid, lady?" I was around three years old. Some of the bakery and dairy trucks still used horses in the late 1930s and early 1940s. They are all dead now. I'm the only one left at the age of 77. What memories of growing up in Buffalo! Thomas

I have several old postcards from Buffalo. One that is very unique is that of an image of a Buffalo with a backdrop of Buffalo landmarks. There is a saying ontop of the postcard, with something like, Buffalo, the Industrial City and some other phrases. Don't have the card in front of me. It is from about 1910/1915. All in black & white and in excellent condition. I wonder if it has any worth.

Thanx for the memories. I haven't even begun to review all the pages. Being a rail buff the scenes of Central Terminal and other rail related facilities were of special interest(oh yeah, so were the churches!!)My dad's family grew up in the Bailey/Delevan St. Gerard Catholic parish...

Thanks for sharing a great collection. Its sad to think of what urban "renewal" did to destroy so much of upstate New York's architectural heritage in '60s and 70s.
