I remember when my mom worked here.

My grandfather, Wm Young, operated the news-stand in the Liberty Bank's lobby for many years, until his death in 1953.

When I was a kid, I remember being able to see the statues from our kitchen window. During Christmas season, they would illuminate the statues with red and green lights.

The German American Bank was just a few stories tall before WWI. In response to the hysteria around the war, the bank changed its name and built the addition you see below and topped it with two statues of liberty. And, yes, there was a restaurant up top; I was in it in 1996 filming a documentary.

My father worked for the old Liberty National Bank for many years. He had told me that originally, the Liberty chiefs wanted to remove the statues from the building when they were merged into then Norstar Bank. However, due to financially constraints they decided not to. He also told me there used to a resturant on the top floor of the new addition with a patio and everything. Could you imagine that today?
