Socony Mobil Tower

Long a South Buffalo landmark on Elk Steet, especially at night when there was always a huge orange flame burning from the top, visible for miles around. It is now gone.

I LIVED ON THE EAST SIDE NEAR HUMBOULT PARK.ICOULD SEE THE FLAME FROM THERE.I HAD A BUDDY IN THE STREETS GARAGE WHO SAID HE USE TO SLEEP ON THE TOP WHEN HE WAS WORKING.

I REMEMBER THE ORANGE FLAME WELL, MY FIRST LOVE MARIE DAVIDSON LIVE ON PEABODY STREET OFF OF ELM, AND AFTER I SAID GOOD NIGHT I WOULD STOP ON THE BRIDGE A WAVE GOODBYE AGAIN ONDER THAT FLAME. When I was a kid in the 1960s and 1970s I woould always look out for this landmark when we came back from my grandparents' country house on Sunday evenings. As I recall there were always two flames visible from the I-190 near downtown and sometimes there were three. Those flames and the illuminated W Y S L letters always signaled that we were almost home and the weekend was officially over with. - Henry
