Sears

Broadway and Fillmore, Buffalo

This was a former Sears store, located at Broadway and Fillmore. It closed when Sears opened a store in the then new Thruway Plaza, sometime in the 1950's.

This building was indeed a Sears Store. Up until the 80's when the sign was removed you could still read the very fadded Sears logo

This building is at 950 Broadway and is currently for sale/lease. It was a sister building to the WT Grant's on Main and Huron, both designed by Bley & Lyman.

Do a Google search on Broadway Fillmore Alive and Eckhardt and you will find a link that contains the building's history that I wrote in 2/06.

According to the owners, who've owned this corner since the 1880's, the store started as Eckhardt's Dept. Store and was a Kobacker's and a Sears. I'm not sure about Grant's. That was never mentioned. It's last use was as an unmployment office for 40 years. It closed in 2004. The link above has interior photos. It's in great condition!

Indeed the Sears store was at Main and Delevan, where Canisus College buildings now stand, and an NFTA terminal?

Are you sure this was a Sears Store? I think I remember it also as a Five and Dime Store. The only Sears store I remember in the city was on Jefferson. But I am enjoying the pictures and the walk thru memory land.

I remember this store when I was a kid. We'd go on Saturday afternoons to shop at Sattler's and the Broadway Market, then hit all the stores on Broadway... Liberty Shoes, Goldens, Kobackers, Neisners, and Murphy's... The store later became the Unemployment Office... It's was across the street from the Liberty Bank and next door to it was Erie County Savings Bank. I have fond memories of the Broadway-Fillmore area since my first job was at Sattlers..

There was also a huge Sears/Robuck on the corner of Main and Jefferson.

You are missing some history on this building. I grew up in this neighborhood in the early 70's. When I lived in this area, there was a 'sister' building just like it downtown on the corner of Main and Huron Streets. Both buildings housed GRANTS FIVE & DIME DEPARTMENT STORES. I don't remember Sears being in the Broadway building, but I do remember Grants. Then They just went out of business while I was a little boy.
