KB Radio

1430 Main St. Buffalo

This was the studio of WKBW Radio, 1520 AM. This was a 50,000 watt powerhouse that became legendary for its' on air personalities, starting with George "The Hound" Lorenz in the fifties and a succession of DJ's which lasted through the early seventies. It was a great station; I was in Ft. Lauderdale in 1969, and I picked it up on the car radio. The station has since moved to suburban Amherst.

My memories of WKBW are of wacko DJ's Danny Nevereth and Joey Reynolds. I think they even put our a novelty single together.

George "Hound Dog" Lorenze did, I believe predate "Wolfman Jack",..who used that same gravelly on-air voice. He was on from 7PM, to 10 Pm weeknights. The station was one of the first 50,000 watt AM stations, and at night, they re aligned their signal to a North-South orientation, and you were able to tune it in as far away as Florida. WKBW, as the story goes, was founded by the Churchill Tabernacle people for the purpose of broadcasting it's Sunday evening services. WKBW, I'm told meant "Well Known Bible Worshippers". They occupied the red brick building next door to the radio station in the picture.

WKBW actually lasted until the end of 1985. It moved from this site on Main Street in the late 70's and relocated to a lovely carriage house at 695 Delaware Avenue near Sommer Street. It was sold by Capital Cities Communitcations at the end of 1986 and became known as WWKB in January 1986. It was never the same powerhouse again.
