In 1961, Buick introduced a new compact model, the Skylark. Along with it a new engine was launched, an all aluminum small block V8 of 215 CI. It was available in a 2 barrel version of 155 HP, and a 4 barrel version of 185 HP, then 190 HP, and finally 200 HP. These engines were also installed in early Pontiac Tempest's, and Olds F-85's. After a three year run, production was ceased, with Buick indicating that it cost too much to manufacture. It was replaced by a new 300 CI cast iron V8 for the 1964 model year.

It is interesting to note that the rights and tooling for this engine were sold to the British Rover Company, which produced the engine into the 2000's.

The pictured engine has a non-stock four barrel carburetor and air cleaner.
