May 21, 2006 --- Buffalo Lake, Alberta

Mark and I hit the water at about 10:00 a.m. this fine Alberta morn; we're at "The Narrows" Provincial Recreation Area at Buffalo Lake. We've never fished here before, so today is a bit of an exploratory trip. We poke around the general area. There are quite a number of gear fishermen about, and we run into a couple of fly fishers as well. The park itself is kinda cool, with camping/picnic pads right up on the shore of the winding channel they call The Narrows. So, you can back your pickup right to the edge, set up your rod by the picnic table, and relax whilst listening to the teenager next door pound out rap music on his ghetto blaster, and watching the roaming packs of yelling kids. In any event, the fishing reports are generally of slim pickings. One fella says he missed a 40 inch pike; his buddy had landed five fish on Thursday but only one yesterday. Eventually, we find an area where the pike are bitin'. There were a couple of other boats that were picking up fish in this area either by trolling, or with chucking spinning gear. I would say that Mark and I end up with a half dozen solid hits apiece, with the usual assortment of break-offs, LDR's, follows and misses. We bring a couple of pike apiece to the boat, none of them particularly large, tho. Surface poppers not working today; yellow seemed to be the colour of choice. We're off the water by about 2:30. I have to go to a wedding in Forestburg.
