August 25, 2007 --- St. Mary River, British Columbia
After grazing at the lovely breakfast buffet at the St. Eugene golf club, we meet Clint at about nine, and he drives us up to our "rough" launch site (there are some "good" launch sites around, but local guides have tied up the access). After giving us a hand hauling in our boats and gear, Clint takes our vehicle back to the cabin, where there is a small takeout virtually at the front door. We are on the water at about ten, and with a lot of stopping to walk and wade, we end up at the takeout by about six. The river is fabulous, with a seriously wild feel, and very little traffic (we see one fisherman, and there is a raft behind us). Scores of fish are brought to hand, altho I am again "King of the Whitefish". I know, I know... fish nymphs and that's what ya get, but again there is no visible hatch and virtually no surface activity. But subsurface, there is all kinds of action. Mark decides, at midday, to try his hand with a streamer, and it works very well in locating the bigger cutties, as well as a couple of northern pikeminnow. After a couple of cold Kokanees at the cabin, we make the trek back to Fernie, where it's sake and sushi at Yamagoya Sushi for a fine end to a fine day.
